R-Anell Plant in Cherryville Reopens for Gaston County EDC 2003 Annual Report
A plant in Cherryville, which formerly made manufactured homes, is reopening to produce buildings for auto lubrication facilities and car washes.

R-Anell Housing Group LLC of Denver, N.C., was one of Cherryville's largest employers with 300 workers at its Gold Medal Homes plant before selling its facilities in 1998 to Texas-based American Homestar Corp., which subsequently went bankrupt, shutting down its operations in January 2001.

The property was repurchased by R-Anell owner Dennis Jones and three partners in March 2001. He has now created a partnership with Boegh Building Systems LLC of Salisbury and invested about $500,000 to modify the Cherryville facility to produce light commercial buildings, including fast-lube and car wash building systems. The plant is initially employing about 30 workers and could eventually employ as many as 250, Jones said.

"We're excited about the opportunity to return to Cherryville and the opportunity to work with Boegh Building Systems," Jones added. "The community and people in Cherryville have always been wonderful to work with."

The plant will manufacture galvanized steel modular facilities for Boegh, complete with electrical, plumbing and mechanical requirements included. The building systems are equipped with oil storage and distribution equipment, computer information systems and, unique to Boegh Building Systems, an operation training program, up to and including opening the store.

"We are pleased to be partnering with a company that provides such professionalism in its manufacturing operations," said George Hough, manager of Boegh Building Systems. "This provides us the ability to ramp up manufacturing to match sales growth. We look forward to continued success and growing the plant to maximum capacity."

The Cherryville plant is located on 120 acres, with two production lines totaling 250,000 square feet under a 5.5-acre roof. One line will be used for the Boegh products and the other could eventually be used for modular homes or other structures, Jones said. "We've maintained the facility with the expectation of reopening," he explained. "The power and water haven't been turned off. We've been exploring our options."

"It's a great building for what they want to do," said Donny Hicks, executive director of the Gaston County EDC. "There are a lot of systems that work well with that setup."

R-Anell Housing Group employs about 350 people in Denver, where it produces system-built single-family homes, apartments, condominiums and commercial structures. It distributes products in seven Southeastern states through 65 independent builders and three company-owned model home center centers.
